Medford 2005 Candidate for Mayor

  • McGlynn, Michael

Q8: Energy Costs

How are increasing energy costs affecting the school budget this year?

How is this increase being offset and what can be done to address the issue in the long term?

Brady: Q8 - Energy Costs

Energy costs are way up. There will definitely be an impact on the school budget. We all talk about conservation but it cannot by itself make up the difference between what cost was and what it is today. It is time for the state to initiate an assistance plan for communities to help deal with these rising costs.

Cincotti : Q8 - Energy Costs

I would like to answer the question this way. First off I think this question is ahead of it self (A) we have no knowledge how this winter will be (B) we all are aware of what projected energy costs may be. However! there many avenues we can take to decrease our composition of energy

  1. bid for fuel and electricity through alternate suppliers
  2. better control of our HVAC systems as it relates to operating sequences
  3. control demand use/i.e. start and stop of motorized equipment
  4. such as timing controlled devices to allow for staggered usage

Cugno: Q8 - Energy Costs

The increasing energy costs will affect the school budget. When they do not have enough money put aside the only way to compensate, unfortunately, is to take the money from something else to cover the cost. I can only bring my everyday personal experience to the table. With four children, we live with a financial budget. I know what my expenses are every month. When unexpected costs present themselves I have no choice but to take from a rainy day fund. That is how our school budget is made up. We should have a rainy day fund put aside to cover unexpected costs. We cannot control the weather; one year we can have an extremely cold winter or an extremely hot summer. Right now our school system has taken a severe cut in governmental funds, so there is no choice but to cut. What I would like to see for the long term is to try to regain as much money as possible back from the government funds. The government wants us to have the best in schools, administration, and performance of students. We cannot do this alone as a city. We need to get our funding back.

DiGiantommaso: Q8 - Energy Costs

We should demand that the State give cities and town more money to keep up with increasing costs.

Kulik: Q8 - Energy Costs

There is no doubt that increasing energy cost will be a major problem with this year's already strained school budget. Unfortunately, like anyone who pays for his or her own heat, we will need to come up with the money somehow. Without cutting programs to pay for heat, there are only two solutions -- receive more money from the state, or run a deficit.

It will be extremely difficult to cut programs, as they have already been cut as much as possible by this year's austerity budget. Our new buildings already have energy efficiency built in, so it will be difficult to squeeze additional cost savings by implementing special energy saving ideas. We could probably cut down on the lights, or run the thermostats even lower, but it will be difficult.

One parent that I know is interested in making a learning experience out of monitoring energy usage. Another group is interested in using school property for alternative energy generation. I support both of these ideas and would continue to explore other ways that we can lower our energy usage.

Pompeo: Q8 - Energy Costs

Escalating energy costs will affect budget decisions.  Supt. Belson estimates a 30% increase in gas and utility bills.  Unless federal or state aid is forthcoming, the answer begins with "T".

Skerry: Q8 - Energy Costs

One only has to listen to a radio or read a daily newspaper to catch up on current events along with the Devastation of Hurricane Katrina to realize that it will be a long winter on the East Coast. Many of us were alerted to energy shortages with the spike in gas prices in late August. It Is time for the FEDERAL and STATE goernments to act and not react. It is possible, due to sever weather that energy costs will soar in Medford as a result of damages to southern refineries this past summer. We in Medford will conserve but our fuel budget will have to be monitored monthly.
