Brady: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

We offer one of the finest Advanced Placement programs in the state. Last year 42 graduates received 104 qualifying grades on AP exams that they earned at Medford High School. Four Medford students were recognized by the National Merit Corporation. Medford was a co-sponsor of the Gifted and Talented planning summit. We plan to apply for a grant under a new gifted and talented allocation in the state budget. Medford recognizes the need to do more in this area.

Cincotti : Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

Absolutely. Having bin in business for many years in the City of Medford, I have had many opportunities to decuss our educational system with parents and students alike. I feel that The Medford Public School System is adequately designed to handle the gifted students, is there room for improvements? most certainly the ability is in the child and the teachers are the key

Cugno: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

Unfortunately, we do not provide a specific program like we did years ago at the high school with Ms. Marilyn Bloomsack or even a couple of years ago with Mr. William O'Brien, the fifth grade teacher at the McGlynn Elementary School, who ran the Building of Bridges program. However, we do provide some extras. For instance, we provide Italian language classes starting in the second grade. These classes are subsidized by the Italian government and do not cost any additional tax dollars. There is a wonderful chorus program, called Treble Makers, which also starts in the second grade level, instructed by Ms. Karapian. Starting in the third grade string instruments and starting at the fourth grade level string and wind instruments are being offered. Also, I believe that the eighth grade band has the opportunity to participate with the high school band. I also can speak about the McGlynn Middle School where Mr. Deveney has plenty of after-school programs for any of his students that want to participate. Anywhere from sports, student council, Junior National Honor Society and The Bridges Club, an affiliation of the Kiwanis Club.

Kulik: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

No. While we have a great honors and advanced placement program at the High School, we do not currently have adequate programs or policies in place for those elementary and middle school students that are academically performing well above their grade expectation. We also do not have adequate art, music, or performance instruction to bring out these skills in gifted students.

Recently Medford has begun to explore how such programs could be put in place. As a school committee member, I would make sure that we thoroughly investigate how we can take advantage of state and private grants to implement gifted and talented programs. I would also look into teacher training, teaching methods, and policies that would enable every teacher to better address advanced students at all levels.

One method that is employed by some teachers is referred to as developmental or constructivist. It allows teachers to work with not only the middle students, but also with those who either excel or have difficulty with the subject material. These are considered best educational practices and should be considered when hiring new teachers and when developing training programs for our current teachers.

Pompeo: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

Medford’s high school offers many honors and advanced placement courses. Ask for a copy of headmaster Kreuger’s report of the class of ’05.  It is convincing testimony of the merit of this challenging program.  There are many after school programs that compliment those that serve the academically gifted.

Skerry: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

YES. Recently Medford sponsored a state wide summit for teaching and working with gifted and talented students and we are looking at ways to expand the grant to expand programming.

Our after school activities and programs offerred are second to NONE.

The Honors program and advanced placement courses are amongst the most offered in Eastern Mass.

Van der Kloot: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

Gifted and talented programs took a hit in many school systems, including ours, in recent years. However, Medford just recently co-sponsored the Massachusetts Gifted and Talented Planning Summit which was convened because of a concern that teacher/classroom initiatives alone were not adequately meeting the needs of all students. This year, the Medford Public Schools will apply for a grant to expand Gifted and Talented programs.

At the High School, honors and advanced placement classes challenge students capable of advanced work. While individual schools offer after school enrichment activities and special opportunities, there is certainly room for increasing challenging opportunities for our students. It is my personal belief that we should always strive to increase and improve opportunities for our students.

I am also a strong advocate for music and art programs which I think benefit all our students and offer some students an area in which they may particularly excel. Over the years, I have certainly noticed a high correlation of students in our High School music programs being amongst the top academic achievers.
