Q1: Why Medford Public Schools?

If parents were to ask you why they should send their children to Medford public schools rather than private schools, what would you tell them?

What would you tell them if their children had a physical, social/emotional, or developmental disability?

Brady: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

The Medford Public Schools has an excellent teaching faculty. We have state of the art school facilities not available in most private schools. We maintain good class sizes. Medford provides a wide variety of course offerings. 70% of the students go on to post secondary schools and others trained in our very fine vocational school obtain jobs in their fields. Services like this are not found in most private schools where you would have to pay tuition above your local tax contribution.

Cincotti : Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

It would be adventatges to send your children to our Medford Public Schools since your tax dollars are paying for IT ANYWAY!

Cugno: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

Our public school system provides us with state of the art buildings and highly educated teachers and administrators. Our elementary and middle schools along with the high school provide computers, gym, arts, and music. Our high school alone provides different levels of education, not only standard classes but also honors classes, highest honors, and AP (advanced placement) classes. Our Vocational school allows a student the opportunity to excel in their chosen career path. For a child with a disability we offer classes in all levels throughout the schools that range from Title I, (reading program) speech therapy to ALP (Adaptive Learning Program) classes. All these programs that we offer do not cost the family any additional out of pocket expenses. Our public school system provides the opportunity for our children, parents and teachers to grow as people with the diversity and to learn from different cultures. Life experience is something money cannot buy. Now, with all that said and done I am not suggesting that everyone attend a public school. What I truly believe is that parents need to know what their own child’s situation is and place him/her in the school they feel will best suit their child and their family.

DiGiantommaso: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

New schools - State paying 90% of cost. Low class size 19-22. Two students per computer. Excellent staff. Have programs other cities do not have, such as all-day kindergartens and bussing. Our special education department costs over ten million dollars per year, so we are able to give good services.

Kulik: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

I've talked to parents throughout the city about why they have chosen private or religious schools or home schooling for their children, and have been told a variety of reasons. In some cases, no public school will ever adequately addressed their concerns, such as a desire for religiously based instruction, or for a particular specialty that a private school might offer.

Sometimes parents have decided to send their children to private schools because of outdated or inaccurate information. For these parents, I would recommend that they visit the schools, speak with some of the school staff, and talk to parents whose children attend the schools. They should also talk to those who have graduated and gone on to prestigious state and private universities, or who are now gainfully employed in a trade or profession. The Medford High School has extensive honors and advance placement programs and the Medford Vocational School is one of the few vocational schools in the region.

Additionally, Medford now has all new buildings for the K-8 schools that are physically accessible. And, while there is still much work to be done, the High School has had some major updates including a new roof, heating system, and elevator. Medford also has several special education programs for children with emotional or developmental disabilities -- something that you won't find in private schools.

Although there are many positive reasons for sending your children to Medford schools, in some cases the schools still fall short of parental expectations. As a member of the Medford School Committee, I would explore these reasons in more detail to see how they should be addressed. No parent should have to feel that they must choose a private school simply because Medford Schools "just aren't good enough".

Pompeo: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

Medford has fine public schools offering a wide range of courses taught by certified, committed teachers.  Parents should check two publications:  "Educational Opportunities Handbook" and "Beyond Proficiency".  Also, visit the school of interest and talk with parents of students who attend the school.  Parents whose child may be eligible for  a special needs program should contact the Medford Special Education Advisory Council, attend a meeting, and request a copy of  "A Parents Guide to Special Education."  Parents deciding on private school placement should inquire if they are eligible for a private school voucher.  The president’s '06 budget includes a $50 million dollar increase in private school vouchers.

Van der Kloot: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

My job as a member of the Medford School Committee is to work to ensure that our schools offer to families a strong competitive choice for families considering educational opportunities for their children. The first thing I would suggest to families is that they come visit our schools! When I spoke to parents who have chosen Charter Schools, I have consistently asked them if they visited our schools and they reply no. Thus, their choice is made not on the realities of what the public schools offer, but either on misconceptions or personal preferences. Most private schools carry with them a reality of a substantial price tag which many families cannot even consider. As the Headmaster of Medford High School says, Medford High school offers a wide variety of opportunities to meet the needs of our students at a very attractive price! I believe that our public schools, even with the fiscal realities of this year, offer attractive class sizes, a multi-cultural environment, provide many opportunities for students and families to participate in a wide variety of activities, and most importantly, a learning environment which supports strong achievement by students.

Our new schools are completely accessible and an elevator was added to the High School to ensure accessibility to all students. An extensive special education program exists to meet the needs of students who require special services to meet their needs.

I have worked hard to make the Medford Public Schools an attractive choice for parents although at the same time, I respect those who choose other alternatives. It is a parents' responsibility to consider the unique needs of their child, it is my responsibility to make sure the public school option is a strong and viable choice.
