DiGiantommaso: Q1 - Why Medford Public Schools?

New schools - State paying 90% of cost. Low class size 19-22. Two students per computer. Excellent staff. Have programs other cities do not have, such as all-day kindergartens and bussing. Our special education department costs over ten million dollars per year, so we are able to give good services.

DiGiantommaso: Q2 - Adequate service for gifted and talented?

We have added many classes for gifted and talented with the limited budget.

As the computer age began, the Medford Public Schools put in a five-year plan to acquire computers and keep updating them.

DiGiantommaso: Q4 - On MCAS

The MCAS tests should not be the same for college-bound students, special education and vocational students. MCAS puts a lot of pressure for students to perform. Our test scores have increased to advanced and proficient levels. We have put in extra help programs to help them succeed.

DiGiantommaso: Q5 - Comparisons with surrounding communities

We have many programs that other communities do not have. Other schools have asked our school system for advice, because they felt we had very good programs.

DiGiantommaso: Q6 - Religion in Medford's Public Schools?

We should continue to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Different cultures should observe their holidays.

DiGiantommaso: Q7 - Remaining in touch with school reality

Attended award ceremonies, music and choral recitals, school functions at the Curtis/Tufts. For example, attending the Thanksgiving Dinner put on by the staff and students. Judged the talent show at the McGlynn. Volunteered to read in different schools. Attended special events, the DARE Program and Graduation. Have visited all the schools in my tenure on the School Committee.

DiGiantommaso: Q8 - Energy Costs

We should demand that the State give cities and town more money to keep up with increasing costs.

DiGiantommaso: Q9 - Attracting and retaining excellent teachers

Since Prop 2 1/2, the School Committee does not do the firing and hiring of teachers and administrators. I had a resolution passed that the School Committee interview finalists of major positions in public. The School Committee could then give their input to the Superintendent.
